How Old is the Display case?

While I didn’t come up with an exact date, based on the name plate I found we know that it was manufactured between 1901 and 1926. Which makes the probability it is older that 100 years fairly high.

The dovetails on the drawers are all perfectly uniform and that little gap at the bottom, also perfectly uniform on every cut indicates these were cut by machine. It is probable they were cut using one of Alexander Dodd’s dovetailing machine. Dodd’s still manufactures dovetail machines today in Grand Rapids Michigan and prides themselves on either manufacturing or locally sourcing as many of their parts as possible. Older versions of their current machines can still be found in use.

Here is a video of the Dodd’s machine being used to cut dovetails.

As I was searching for a video to link to the Dodd’s machine, I came across This discussion on Sawmill Creek about this history of mechanized tools for woodworking. While it centers around the invention of the handheld router, it also has fascinating insights as to why and how machines became more prevalent in different areas of the world at different times. It was definitely worth the read.

I always enjoy reading the discussions on Sawmill creek because of the variety of voices you hear chiming in. By the time I’ve read through a thread on a question I’ve had I feel like I’ve heard enough of both sides to make a decision.

Enjoy the history lesson!
