I’ve really enjoyed having my end grain floor in the shop! There is a huge difference just stepping up onto it from the concrete next to it. I think all of the time I put into laying it has paid off. It has fulfilled it’s two primary goals:
1) It’s easier on the joints to stand on.
2) It provides a cushion for dropped tools. Which is especially nice when I have kids building with me.

As I was putting it in a neighbor stopped by to see what I was doing, as I explained that I was trying to use sand between my tiles like you would with pavers to hold them in place. He quickly told me that wasn’t going to work with wood. But didn’t have a good explanation as to why that was his assessment, wisdom of trial and error I suppose ;0)
Undeterred I continued laying my floor with the theory that if the tiles came loose I could always fill the gaps with sawdust.
And that is just what I have done! Filled the gaps with sawdust to make up for the shrinkage in the wood. So far it’s kept the floor feeling solid!

Most of the little chips I spent so long putting in between the larger gaps have worked themselves out, I just sweep in a little more sawdust and rub it in with my boot to fill the gap.
