The old display case has been converted to a work station with a Moxen Vice! Moxen vices are used for holding long pieces of wood on end so you can work on the short side. Very handy when cutting dovetails.
This has been a huge project! For the past few weeks I kept thinking “I’m almost done!” Then there were still hours and hours of work to do on this work station. It’s been worth it though! I have finally converted my antique Display Case into a functioning work station. The drawers still need a little attention before I fill them up, but they can wait for a while yet.
I’m not going to go into great detail of how everything went together, just a few pictures of the process. I tried some mortise and tenon joints on a lot of the frame….some of them ended up with screws in the final assembly. Next time I’ll get them closer ;0).
I built the frame around the base from the old cabinet. this was screwed down to the lower cabinet once I had the upper portion built.
This part took the longest, trying to get all of the mortises cut. I used my Stanley no. 78 to cut the rabbets in the lower rails for the plywood to sit in.
I used 2” finish nails to attach the new framework to the base. In order to get them in without bending I had to drill a pilot hole slightly bigger than the nail. The first three nails I ended up clipping off and pounding in with a nail set.
