Wes has been begging for his own workshop for “forever.” Since he is getting older, he doesn’t like sharing shop space with his mom as much as he used to. We finally moved the grain silo to a new location and started getting him set up.
The grain silo has been sitting on a wooden platform for a very long time. I was a bit surprised when we pulled it off to find that most of the wood underneath was in really good shape, if a little cobweb covered. I
It took some serious muscle to get the 2×6’s pried loose from the runners. It was built using 5” nails and they weren’t giving up their place easily! And it took a few tries to come up with a system that worked. It involved a sledge hammer and a crow bar…
At first I had other plans for the bulk of the wood, but after getting Wes moved out it was obvious he needed another workbench….since I wasn’t going to let him take one of mine.
We made the braces long on the back so that Wes could add in wood to match the curve of the silo once it was in place.
Given the choice, Wes decided that cutting boards to length was more up his alley than screwing the cut pieces together. He’s getting pretty good with the miter saw.
The cutting man caught up with me just in time to attach the last piece to the back leg. This is him clamping it together.
Then just a few more screws and we were done! I’d say it took us about an hour and a half to cut and assemble the bench.
It took a few tries to get this loaded on the tractor. If we had spaced the legs an inch wider it wouldn’t have been a problem at all…but since we didn’t, Wes finally thought of how to get it moved.
And what would a new bench in your very own workshop be without a photo shoot?
I hope he enjoys having a workspace of his own and gets lots of use out of this bench!
